What’s new at the Rosalind & Morris Goodman Cancer Institute?

On October 2nd, The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame (CMHF), announced the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Class of 2026, which included the Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Institute’s Morag Park, PhD.

As we mark leukemia and lymphoma awareness month, the Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Institute (GCI) is highlighting ongoing research from Principal Investigator Heather Melichar. 

Hannah Garner, Ph.D., Principal Investigator at the Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Institute, has been awarded a highly competitive $600,000 USD grant from the V Foundation to study how breast cancer drives pro-metastatic changes in immune cells.

During Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, GCI researchers are highlighting how their work is improving outcomes for men with prostate cancer. PhD student Mirna Farhat is studying HOXB13, a protein that influences disease progression by regulating gene activity.

This Sunday, our community comes together for the Terry Fox Run, carrying forward Terry’s legacy of courage and determination. At the Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Institute (GCI), we see every day how Terry Fox funding drives impact. Nearly $23M invested in research has fueled discoveries in breast cancer and cancer metabolism, while more than $6M in national network support is advancing precision medicine through the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network.

The Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Institute (GCI) is pleased to announce the appointment of John Stagg, PhD, as its new Director, effective September 1, 2025.

As another academic year begins at the Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Institute (GCI), a dedicated group of students are stepping forward to build a stronger, more connected, and inclusive community. This year the Goodman Cancer Student Society (GCSS) is being led by Co-Presidents Phillipe Hutton and Paulina Varela, with support from Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Representative Ellie Massey and a dynamic team of other members.

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Simon F. Roy, M.D., M.H.S., to the Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Institute (GCI) in a joint appointment with McGill University’s Department of Pathology.

Each year, the GCI welcomes a dynamic cohort of undergraduate research interns who spend their summers immersed in real-world cancer research. Working alongside leading scientists and graduate trainees, these students gain hands-on experience, develop new skills, and contribute meaningfully to projects in fields ranging from cancer genomics and immunology to metabolism, and bioengineering.
