The Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Institute (GCI) is proud to celebrate Plinio Queiroz Da Cruz, Technical Lead of the Histology Innovation Platform, who has been awarded the Priyabrata “PB” Mukhopadhyay Award as part of the 2025 VP-Dean’s Ovation Awards.
The Ovation Awards recognize the exceptional contributions of administrative, operational, and technical staff across the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. This year’s recipients were selected for their outstanding performance in quality of work, innovation, service excellence, and dedication.
Since joining the GCI’s core facilities in 2019, Plinio has become an indispensable member of our research community. His technical mastery, spanning complex histological techniques such as tissue microarray generation, frozen sectioning, and spatial multi-omics preparation, supports more than 50 labs and 140 users each year. Beyond his expertise, Plinio’s calm mentorship and patient training have shaped the next generation of staff and trainees.
In 2024, his leadership and initiative transformed histology workflows to support advanced spatial transcriptomics, enabling research collaborations across McGill’s Genome Centre and SCIMAP. His problem-solving ingenuity, commitment to service, and consistent delivery of high-quality results have earned deep respect from colleagues and clients alike.
As one colleague shared, “Plinio is the heart of our platform. His wisdom, guidance, and kindness have shaped how we train and interact with our research community.” Core facilities like the Histology Innovation Platform are central to advancing cancer research at the GCI, and dedicated professionals like Plinio ensure that innovation and scientific excellence continue to thrive.
Congratulations, Plinio, on this well-deserved recognition—and thank you for all that you do to advance the GCI’s mission.
