For many researchers, the challenge lies not only in making discoveries, but in communicating them. For Laura Wu, MSc, that challenge became a calling. Today we highlight a Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Institute Alumni and the inspiring work she went on to pursue.
Laura completed her Master’s degree in Experimental Medicine in Professor Daniela Quail, PhD.’s laboratory at the GCI. Here, she developed a strong foundation in academic research. Today, she is channeling that scientific expertise in a remarkably creative direction; as a first-year medical illustration student in the Biomedical Communications Master’s program at the University of Toronto.
The transition may seem unexpected, from wet-lab degree to arts, but for Laura, it is a natural evolution. “I’m passionate about using visual tools to shrink gaps in scientific communication and allow for a smoother flow of information and understanding,” she explains. With years of hands-on laboratory experience behind her, Laura brings something rare to the art of scientific illustration: a deep, firsthand understanding of the biology she depicts.
Beyond anatomical illustrations, each tailored to its audience, Laura has demonstrated a talent for making science accessible and engaging to broader audiences. She has created journal covers, scientific illustrations for general audiences, while making them accessible and true art pieces.
Laura’s trajectory is a testament to the diverse paths that a GCI research training can open. The analytical thinking, attention to detail, and deep engagement with biological complexity that define good research are, it turns out, exactly the qualities that define great scientific illustrations.
The GCI community is proud to count Laura among its alumni and looks forward to watching her work continue to bridge the worlds of science and visual storytelling.
